It probably only works for fans of horror films and filmmaking, but Nightmare Factory is a documentary that is full of detail and care. Donna Davies really cares about her subjects and telling their story in an interesting and informative way. It's not a perfect film, and you're not really going to be moved by it all, but if you like seeing how films are made or learning about interesting sub-cultures, than you'll enjoy Nightmare Factory.

There really isn't much to say about Nightmare Factory at all. It's a pretty straight to the point documentary about a make-up effects company. Starts with the background of the founders, how the founders got together, and how the founders founded the company. Then it goes it goes into the company's history and where it is today. Lots of archival footage, lots of "b-roll" footage, lots of interviews, et cetera. It's a pretty messy documentary in terms of pacing and structure and hot it handles itself. If it wasn't for its content, this would be a one-star documentary. But because I think the content is so important, that itself gets my two-and-a-half rating. srsly Nightmare Factory really tells you what these make-up effects people do, how much goes into it, how much it means to them to get everything right, and they do much more than you think they do. I was unaware myself. There are plenty of things they do that I figured visual effects people did. But anyway, that's not what's important here. The importance is that there is a debate going on regarding how long make-up artists like these guys will be around for. Some think it'll die out. Be replaced by CGI and all that. Some think it'll never die, but indeed wither a great deal. So I recommend anyone interested in filmmaking or anyone interested in becoming a filmmaker to watch this. It's intriguing and important. I beg you to help keep these guys in business. I'm vowing to. That's all I have to say. Two-and-a-half mangos out of four.
