Movie Info

Activist, linguist, and dissident thinker Noam Chomsky was once described by The New York Times as "the most important intellectual alive," and he has gained both passionate admirers and vehement detractors for his outspoken speeches and writings on United States foreign policy. From the Vietnam War to the post-9/11 conflict in Iraq, Chomsky has bravely confronted the failings of America's policies abroad, and examined how the nation's political decision-making process is frequently compromised in a manner that does not benefit the people. Noam Chomsky: Rebel Without a Pause is a documentary which looks at the work of this outspoken activist, focusing on the issues of post-9/11 terrorism and the growing sentiment against Americans around the globe; the film also includes contributions from fellow activists and Carol Chomsky, Noam's wife and tour manager. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

The best section is the discussion on "fear" and how powerful people using the tools of government AND private sources like the media manipulate the masses, most of whom will never, ever realize it.

Noam Chomsky has appeared in seven documentaries and has had dozens of other filmed appearances. This is one of them, and that's about it. Nothing bad but nothing outwardly exciting either. The film is comprised of nothing more than poorly shot footage of public speaking engagements which lacked any sort of panache or luster. Some may argue that Chomsky's words are important enough. While this may be true if it were the first time he appeared on film, for a guy who has become the de facto talking head for any film touching on the subject of political dissidence, to stand out this film needed something more. While there are some interviews with Chomsky's wife, we never get a one-on-one with the man himself. One wonders if Chomsky got the sense this film wasn't going to be anything special and didn't even bother to lend it a personal touch.
