"Hitler's Dog" starts in the middle of a joke and it ends abruptly. In bookending his show this way, Mr. Macdonald not only toys with the meaning of a joke, but he also drives home the point that the part can be funnier than the whole.

If you don't laugh at Macdonald's material about cellphones and George Washington chopping down the cherry tree - well, I'm sorry, but you're just not a smart person if you don't find his stuff funny.

While others zig, Macdonald doesn't zag, but instead chooses to plow straight ahead. His observational comedy can focus so narrowly on the target that it strikes the true bull's eye of the premise.
