Viewers follow Ember, an adventurous black college student, as she navigates her relatably problematic relationships at university. Ember’s caught between different friend groups and bogged down by her ex-boyfriend when she takes a spring break trip to a lake house in the Florida backwoods with her ignorant girl friends. Othered by her friends and haunted by the past, Ember’s plight places "Noseeums" in a lane of recent black horror films like "Get Out" and "Sinners" that explore the history of prejudice in America, this time through the lens of an independent filmmaker. Its amateur voice and reliable scares are a feature, not a flaw. Raven Carter solidifies herself as a director-to-watch with her horrific view of the American South and its legacy in "Noseeums". When Ember is invited to a lake house by her friends, she starts seeing past visions of an African American couple tormented by their neighbors, and when these visions intensify, Ember realizes that the present may not be quite so different. Aleigha Burt, who plays Ember, stands out in this film, and her portrayal of panic and ancestral grief is masterfully done. What isn’t conveyed through facial expressions is subtly illustrated through a control over body language rarely seen in indie projects. Shot in the Florida backwoods, this beautiful location portrays Florida’s natural beauty through gorgeous lakes and stunning sunsets. But as the terrors of the past come to light, the setting becomes corrupted by shadows and bloodthirsty insects that poignantly illustrate the tragedy of injustice. See more Addison A @AliceLee1210 4 days ago Noseeums is one of those horror films that disturbs you… but you can’t turn away. Personally, that’s what I hope for when watching a quality horror film. It has all of the right elements: intense shadows, jump scares, prolonged shots, and characters who just don’t listen until it’s too late. Director Raven Deshay Carter holds qualities comparable to Jordan Peele, with a similar level of uncomfortable realism seen in Get Out. Choosing to focus on a group of girls allowed for relatability and understanding for everyone in the audience. The setting of North Florida was also a strong choice to aid in the messaging of generational trauma involving racism and land ownership. Not only did they have pretty landscapes, but they took advantage of the history when selecting locations, and the thought is impressive for a debut feature. All in all, a very well-rounded, must-see horror film. (C-) See more Ceceile J @RT89392719 Jul 24, 2026 Often overlooked as a location for films that are not a period piece, the South, let alone the backwoods, is a very underrepresented region. It was interesting to see the direction director Raven Carter would take. The film Noseeums captures the Florida backwoods in a way rarely seen. There are so many breathtaking shots of the landscape that look straight out of a painting. The colors are vibrant, and the natural lighting brings so much warmth to the scenes that wonderfully contrast the gore and suspense. This film, thankfully, does not suffer from the extreme low lighting present in many of today's films. Everything is very well lit, and the necessary details are clearly visible. Shadows and low brightness are used intentionally at appropriate times to encourage viewers to look more closely at the screen. This is a film that immediately grabs your attention and keeps you throughout the whole viewing. See more Read all reviews
