Ceceile J @RT89392719 17h Often overlooked as a location for films that are not a period piece, the South, let alone the backwoods, is a very underrepresented region. It was interesting to see the direction director Raven Carter would take. The film Noseeums captures the Florida backwoods in a way rarely seen. There are so many breathtaking shots of the landscape that look straight out of a painting. The colors are vibrant, and the natural lighting brings so much warmth to the scenes that wonderfully contrast the gore and suspense. This film, thankfully, does not suffer from the extreme low lighting present in many of today's films. Everything is very well lit, and the necessary details are clearly visible. Shadows and low brightness are used intentionally at appropriate times to encourage viewers to look more closely at the screen. This is a film that immediately grabs your attention and keeps you throughout the whole viewing. The college trip soon turns into a nightmare when a vengeful ghost awakens to reclaim a memory from a traumatic past. "Noseeums" tackles the social horrors associated with systemic racism and the invisible pain that grows with it. The movie portrays white privilege in contemporary America by building a parallel with the past struggles of Black people, in particular, the unfortunate ones who were deprived of their own lands. Despite the relevance of its social commentary, the narrative feels exploitative and immature, lacking the necessary depth for a topic that certainly deserves a more serious approach. See more PVD H @PVD_Horror Feb 28 NoSeeUms is a film that attempts to tackle some pretty serious themes of racial equality and generational trauma, however, comes off portraying its own set of issues by utilizing stereotypical characters who lack any sense of depth or dimension. The film presents its characters as almost caricatures archetypes they are intended to represent, lacking any alternative portrayals, sending the message that "they are all this way" versus the idea that even individuals within the same race, ethnicity or culture can have their own independent thoughts, values and personalities. To believe all people are one way presents the problematic idea that people can’t learn or grow and therefore there is no reason to try to provoke and insight change. Aside from that, the dialogue was wasn’t great and the use of computer generated special effects really caused issue on effectiveness of any gore or death scenes.
