Movie Info

The Brazilian Antonio Das Mortes casts Mauricio De Valle as a mercenary peacekeeper. Agreeing to hunt down and kill rebel soldiers, the mercenary becomes increasingly drawn to the rebel's cause. His 11th-hour turnaround does not prevent the film from ending in a bloodbath. Antonio das Mortes unabashedly casts its lot with such insurgents as Che Guevara. As such, this 1968 film had difficulty finding an American distributor until two years later. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Audience Reviews for O Dragão da Maldade contra o Santo Guerreiro (Antonio das Mortes)

There is virtually nothing in this film that had not been told before in Rocha's most iconoclastic films. It feels contrived, confusing, dull and repetitious, proving to be a real endurance test for the viewer, even with so many evocative shots and mesmerizing tableaux.

hallucinogenic western at it's best, a kind of sequel to 'black god, white devil'

Again, Rocha's strongest achievement is in sound design and the use of song for narration. Other than that, it's kind of like Jodorowsky with about 90% of the surrealism removed. If that doesn't sound dull to you, well, it is to me. I had a really, really hard time making myself care about what was going on or who was killing who. It does move at a good clip, at least, but I was still pretty bored and disinterested, despite appreciating how unusual it was.
