Movie Info

The clashing of two very different worlds results in a tragic love story in the heady days leading up to dramatic social unrest. OBEY is about Leon, a nineteen year old boy with an alcoholic mother who has grown up in and out of care. Finally free from adult supervision, Leon begins to rail against the injustice of his reality as his dreams become more and more unattainable and distant. Oppressed at home and hunted on the streets by local gangs, Leon's existence is suffocating, and all too real. When he meets Twiggy, a beautiful blond girl living in a local squat something stirs inside of him. As she introduces him to her world, the weight of his past lifts. He is in love for the first time and for a moment escapes the reality of his unrelenting existence. But naïve to the affluent world supporting Twiggy's hedonistic lifestyle, Leon is unprepared when Twiggy no longer wants him around. Leon withdraws allowing his raw and unhampered emotions to take over in the blind fight against his unjust existence with terrifying and brutal consequences. Raw and uncompromising, OBEY draws inspiration from films such as Catch Me Daddy, Fish Tank, This is England and KIDS.

Critic Reviews for Obey

All Critics (7)

It's an ambitious first film, with a lot to admire, but there is also the nagging feeling that despite wanting to present another perspective, Obey is sometimes guilty of trotting out clichés... That aside, it's a valiant debut.

Gender, race and class are put under a microscope here. It is not a comfortable look.

While sometimes slow, Obey provokes thought and stays compelling thanks to Marcus Rutherford's quiet magnetism.

July 11, 2018 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

Obey is a compelling watch anchored by visceral, emotional performances by Rutherford and Miller, and a well-crafted script by Jones.

May 22, 2018 | Full Review…

Writer/director Jamie Jones sets the story, location, urban scenes and tense relationships in a boiling pot brimming over with illicit drug use, binge drinking, petty crime and the wildness of youth.

April 30, 2018 | Rating: 2.5/4 | Full Review…

While he doesn't quite tackle a new subject for a first-time British film-maker, Jamie Jones delivers something different and for the most part absorbing in Obey, a drama set during the East London riots of 2011.
