As boring as staring at a white wall for an hour and a half.

There is a quote from the documentary "Heart of Darkness" about the making of Apocalypse Now that says, "There were too many of us. We had access to too much money, too much equipment, and little-by-little, we went insane." The same could be said for this movie. However, while Apocalypse Now is possibly the greatest war movie ever made, this is one of the most overblown miscalculations I have ever seen.

Helmed by no less than THREE directors with the largest budget a Japanese animation had ever been given at the time, it starts off as entertainingly bad and eventually evolves into something FAR more sinister. Humorous meshes of pretentious narrative about space travel and the crew of the Starlight going batshit INSANE high-fiving each other to 80's heavy metal soon give way to a black hole of depression. No characters are developed. Nothing giving any forward progression happens, and the conflicts are so often repeated that the middle 90 minutes will feel like an infinite time loop. Oh, and just when Odin feels like it's going somewhere, it stops with one of the biggest "What the f***?!" endings ever.

Oh, it looks pretty. So did the Sirens, I imagine. But after this siren song plays the same heavy metal song in its entirety for the third time, it's more than apparent what its true nature is. By the way, if you've seen the approx. 90-minute cut, you have NOT truly experienced this movie. Maybe that's a good thing....
