Qubeka's third feature, unpolished as it is, [is] a potential industry milestone: a rare attempt to fuse genre playfulness with post-apartheid political subtext.
It's edge-of-the-seat stuff.
An ugly, nihilistic film, striking on the surface but empty underneath
Of Good Report represents an exciting shift in the kinds of films currently being made in sub-Saharan Africa by and about black Africans, who appear to be getting more adventurous with genres.
The riffs on Lolita are obvious and well referenced, but where Nabokov provoked in prose, Qubeka uses images and angles, forcing us into an uncomfortable complicity.
Of Good Report can perhaps be accused of being a little contrived in its contentious approach - at times being shocking for the sake of being shocking.
