The plot didn't move much, although the Civil War beginning got my attention. An interesting theme worth gaining in the end, but just a little slow for me.

A mostly agreeable late 1930s melodrama about a vibrant young woman who finds herself trapped in the shadow of her beautiful cousin, causing her transformation into an old spinster. The drama is effective largely thanks to the on-screen chemistry between warring cousins Bette Davis and Miriam Hopkins, however the story suffers from too many leaps through time, and certain characters are underdeveloped, often ending with them being simply discarded. The core of the movie however is Davis' performance, which tugs at the heart and exhibits incredible nuances alongside her trademark moves.

It would be wrong to expect anything less than stellar from Davis who once again shines in this moody, melancholic film that tries to cover decades of drama.

One of those pretty good old school tragedies where even the good ending at the end of the film pales desperately in comparison to the protagonist's strife. Miriam Hopkins is such a babe in this movie and so good with her lines as the movie goes on. Early on in the movie she has some crap emotional reactions though, haha.

Wow-Miriam Hopkins' character is a witch and I wanted to beat the crap out of her so much; she sucks as a friend and a woman. Bette Davis broke my heart.

2.5: It starts out a bit like a black and white version of Gone With The Wind, albeit on a much lesser scale, but the title really gives the true arc of the picture away. Davis is pretty good at portraying long suffering and put upon women that keep their feelings bottled up inside. It isn't exactly a sympathetic character, but I'd say that was her own doing. It was far braver of her to portray the woman as she does. I still couldn't help but feel it was a bit over the top though. There were definitely times when I thought she was reaching for a bit too much. She definitely had the dead eyes, dour look, and punishing voice down pat. The use of so many standards from the era, such as My Darling Clementine and Somewhere Over the Rainbow, is interesting to say the least.

So dramatic and so good. Bette Davis and Miriam Hopkins are always brilliant together

What a great film this is. Bette Davis is magnificent, I love her films from the 1930's and 1940's. You can sense the real life animosity between Davis and co-star Miriam Hopkins. I think it helps the film work as well as it does. Great story, excellent production, particularly the costumes and art direction. A great classic.

A very well made melodrama that tugs on the heartstrings but isn't overly maudlin, this was a suitable vehicle for the considerable acting skills of Bette Davis. Her transformation from a vibrant young girl to an old spinster is excellent. The rest of the cast struggle to match her.

A Bette Davis classic movie. This is a real tear-jerker. Bette acts her socks off here and Miriam Hopkins is fantastic too. It's interesting to watch also because Bette and Miriam disliked each other in real life, too (is that an understatement?) Be warned though: this movie will have you sobbing - have tissues handy.

Entertaining and overwrought classic Hollywood drama. A fun watch, and sometimes that's enough.
