A great performance can't elevate an otherwise boilerplate biopic.

The spirit of Ruth Bader Ginsburg shines through and overpowers the passionless script and weak performance of the lead actress. Justin Theroux owns the screen working again with director Mimi Leder - a groundbreaking force in her own right.

If only Leder's film didn't over-project every narrative stroke into a sugary, overscored splat of emphasis. The only starch in the mix, and what any conscious filmgoer will respond to, is RBG herself...

The result is an educational but superficial-feeling portrait.

It's a nice enough movie, well-acted with a fascinating subject, but it isn't much more than that - the kind of pretty good film that you expected to be a bit better.

On The Basis of Sex is well-acted and thoughtful. Dutiful, you might say.

Jones gets the solemnity right, and the drive and dedication, but little else.

Glass-shaterring figure Ruth Bader Ginsburg didn't get nicknamed 'Notorious RBG' overnight. On the Basis of Sex is one poignant, remarkable story on how it all began. Full of fascinating insights, it is trailblazingly engaging and inspiring.

Call this the fast-food version of her life ... and expect little in the way of substance.

A middling, unexceptional biopic of Ginsburg that drives home equality for all under the law, but with a lack of relentlessness or passion that Ginsburg has been known for.

Though not perfectly told, the story cannot help but leave you feeling a sense of inspiration and admiration for Ruth Bader Ginsburg...

The film itself may be conventional but it's also captivating, and it culminates with a courtroom showdown that offers instant satisfaction yet also doesn't erase subsequent history.

If I had to sum up Ginsberg's contributions in a sentence, if you're female and breathing in America, you owe her big time.

[It's] a truly beguiling and inspirational biopic of the life of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Although On the Basis of Sex sticks too closely to the standard conventions of fact-based underdog movies, [Director Mimi] Leder's storytelling has vibrancy that keeps the biopic from feeling dutiful.

Simply a solid and serviceable biopic, but not really anything special.

While Daniel Stiepleman's screenplay fudges the facts here and there to amp up the drama, enough of the real woman shines through in Felicity Jones' fiery performance to make it a satisfying, if formulaic film

The timing makes good marketing sense, but did the movie have to be such a bore?

Unlike Ginsberg, Leder's film -- a by-the-numbers exercise rife with cinematic clichés -- doesn't do much to distinguish itself.

Just because a movie pleasantly depicts a genuinely interesting and admirable figure in a positive light does not make it good, and we ought to be suspect of any history we think we glean from shallow soft-focus projects like this.
