If there's something potentially dangerous or reactionary about Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood's nostalgia for a bygone era and its trickle-down frontier heroism, it's a tension that Tarantino plays with thoughtfully...

Like most of Tarantino's work, Once Upon A Time in... Hollywood is eliciting very strong emotions on both sides of the spectrum.

I love this movie... When [director Quentin Tarantino] pulls the ripcord and it goes bananas, it is just so much fun.

You can feel the love of cinema in it, but I thought it was fantastically ill-disciplined and indulgent and whole blocks of "DVD extras."

[Tarantino's] most personal film, it is also the one he has hinted may be his last. If so, he will have quit while he's ahead.

This is a film set in a stunningly evoked Hollywood past. It can also be read as a commentary on Hollywood present.

Apr 17, 2020From writer/director Quentin Tarantino comes the period drama Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood. A "what if" historical fiction like Inglourious Basterds, the film looks at the 1969 Manson Family Murders supposing that an aging action star and his stuntman had been living next door to Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate. Featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Kurt Russell, and Dakota Fanning, the film has an impressive cast; though most of the roles (apart from DiCaprio and Pitt) are little more than extended cameos. And the pacing is incredible slow, fetishizing old Hollywood as Tarantino is want to do. Still, his penchant for witty, engaging dialog is in full effect. While it meanders about too long and its blurring of fantasy and reality feels like a cheat, Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood is entertaining and fun (to a point).Dann M Super Reviewer

Apr 16, 2020"What if Charlie Manson's cult attack on swanky entertainment persons of L.A. were made instead against, umm, more of a down home type guy?" seems to be the essential question of this look at California culture in the late 60's, inundated as it was with incessant media aimed at pleasure and mayhem. In the meantime we lackadaisically are lead to follow a faded actor's attempt to resuscitate his career while in that environment, as well as that of his stuntman best friend. This adventure is interesting while not essential to the story, which nonetheless is (ala typical Tarantino) topped with a violent climax. Worth watching again? You bet. Great realisation? Incredible.Kevin M. W Super Reviewer

Dec 10, 2019This film could have been so much shorter and just as good. Huge chunks, particularly with DiCaprio, ended up being a waste of time in the grand scheme of the film. Margot Robbie was completely underused, but Pitt's character was well written and acted. The final sequence of the film is so great it almost justifies everything leading up to it, but I would not want to watch this film again based on the runtime and fluff alone.Sanjay R Super Reviewer
