Engagement with the audience is relegated mostly to nods and winks, with a chuckle here and there, rather than crafting a thought-provoking story with compelling characters.

Funny, exciting and wildly entertaining, Operation Avalanche is another big win for Matt Johnson, a director who clearly has a promising future ahead of him.

Snowballs itself into a black hole of boredom.
August 28, 2018
A highly entertaining and engaging comedy and thriller that audiences don't get very often these days.

All I wanted to do was insist cinematographers Andrew Appelle and Jared Raab get a tripod and keep the shots sharp and solid instead of headache-inducing movement.

This isn't the kind of shaky horror flick you've seen countless times before, or the type of USA versus USSR effort that has been pumped out since the 1960s.

Very amusing, well-made comedy mockumentary, set in the late-1960s, that explains how and why the Apollo 11 Moon landing was faked. Director Matt Johnson squeezes a lot out of a scant-budget.

A frisky, fertile dive into conspiracy theories and the righteous dedication that often gives birth to them, this low-budget Canadian feature is a series of movies within movies: alternately found, forged and finessed.

This Apollo-era would-be suspense-thriller mockumentary is more an exercise in 'look how film-school cool and clever we are' than anything else.

...impresses with its humour, depth and numerous salutes to Kubrick.

There are enough paranoid-thriller sequences set to well-chosen Creedence Clearwater Revival tunes, to suggest the movie that could have been made with a little more seriousness, and money. Not that it matters.

Better as a tribute to the lost art of analog filmmaking and practical effects than a paranoid espionage thriller...

What started out as retro conspiracy comedy abruptly becomes paranoid thriller. It works better earlier on, as a mockumentary high on its own supply of faked lunar-landing lunacy.

"Operation Avalanche" is an inventive grab-bag of a film, a movie about making a movie that no one was supposed to know was a movie at all.
September 30, 2016
Operation Avalanche is both a hilarious mockumentary and a tense thriller that dares to imagine what crazy people have been saying for 40 years; that Apollo astronauts never actually walked on the moon.
September 30, 2016
That's one small step for Apollo 11 hoaxers, one giant leap for Matt Johnson.
September 30, 2016
The novelty of the movie's clever, in-the-know hook supports this material for only so long...
September 30, 2016
Part mockumentary, party black comedy, part action-adventure and part cinematic dare, the movie is a bizarre, engrossing creation that will leave audiences either delighted or baffled, though never bored.

A send-up like this works far better for a few minutes on the small screen (see Documentary! or Drunk History); at feature length it becomes a stylistic exercise, like a kid mugging for the camera through an Instagram filter.

The film's jittery cinematography grows irritating, but Johnson's geeky performance is delightful, and the movie's notion that two buffoons were behind history's greatest space expedition is one of the year's better gags.
