This global sampling indicates a middling crop this year, representing the promise of what these filmmakers might do in the future over excellence in the present.

Two great reasons to see The Oscar-Nominated Short Films 2014: Live Action - one dark and funny and wickedly existential, the other a nail-biter of a domestic drama, filled with dread.

The fact that dedicated committees of conscientious human beings who know a lot about how movies are made weeded through hundreds and hundreds of submissions and picked their favorites ... is something to be grateful for.

Audience Reviews for Oscar Nominated Live Action Short Films 2014

This years collection of live action short film nominees stretches across five countries and five completely different styles of filmmaking: unfortunately, the overall quality of these films is average at best. Helium is the only one worth noting on here, which is far above the rest of them in quality and meaning. Bottom line, I'd recommend watching them all if you haven't seen that many short films before; but if you have, watch Helium and prepare to have your mind hole blown. The Voorman Problem is worth watching as well.

Pretty good films this year... "Aquel No Era Yo" obviously stood out from the rest. Least amusing was the sad story, "Helium", that felt like "Polar Express".
