This haunting detective story fascinated me because of its dreamlike, neo-noir feeling and the added layer of cosmology as a backdrop to the crime.

...might be one of the only metaphysical, existential, murder mysteries you'll ever see.

It's bold and occasionally maddening, but there's not much other genre fare like it right now.

An exploration of the big mysteries that dwarf crime conundrums.

The mystery at hand is generally quite compelling and the payoff works for the most part.

Talented actors give slow-burning murder mystery gravitas.

Loosely adapted from Martin Amis' novel Night Train, this is a bold thriller with a big idea at its core, and although it fells short of its aims there's some good stuff along the way.

Clarkson and the supporting cast and the atmospheric setting are more interesting than the muddled not-as-clever-as-they-think-it-is plot.

Carol Morley's murder mystery is a mood piece that alternates between naffness and transcendence.
September 11, 2018
A much needed camp parody of Hitchcockian proportions, told from a female perspective. Morley and her cast know exactly when to ham it up and when to build genuine emotive tension.

Out of Blue is one of those films you're not sure if you really enjoyed viewing, but you're immensely glad that it exists, cheered to know the film industry still has room for maverick, boundary-smudging work like this.

Morley sustains a vibe of low-key Lynchian weirdness throughout, enough to keep your mind from wandering even as the investigation meanders this way and that.
September 9, 2018
Out of Blue undeniably works as a stylish, psychological neo-noir, but significantly less so as metaphysical rumination.

There's a light, Lynchian touch throughout. The film can be hilarious while dealing with dark emotions, thanks especially to wonderful performances from Clarkson and Jackie Weaver.

A flawed film, but a valuable one.

A maudlin, incoherent snooze of a thriller that takes itself far too seriously.

For one of America's most unique and photogenic locales, the Crescent City is as wasted as Clarkson-so boring to look at that the whole movie could have just as well been shot in Toledo, Ohio.

A limp noodle of a cinematic noir that drains Patricia Clarkson of her usual eccentric charisma. And where it aims for intriguingly oblique pseudoscientific philosophizing, it ends up merely obtuse.

A detached motion picture, and it's hard to get away with that clinical approach and still adhere to a thriller format.

[Out of the Blue] tries too hard to both be a part of -- and comment on -- the genre of crime stories, and does not succeed at either.
