Beneath its tense action and creative creature designs is an interesting metaphor for the way war changes people.

Those happy to embrace the silliness can expect a steady supply of pulpy, B-movie fun coupled with moments of effectively nasty blood-and-guts body horror.

Despite its excellent segue from one movie genre to another, it does not fully live up to its promise.

Its premise is battling the tone throughout, a fight that neither side ends up winning. A cacophonous, sporadically entertaining mess.

Gritty, gory, and a hell of a lot of fun, Overlord just might be one of the best genre crossover films to be released in some time.

This super-gory Nazi-zombie horror is great fun and unrelenting throughout its violent twists and atmospheric turns.

While Overlord's premise screams B-movie and the feature knows it, [director Julius] Avery doesn't handle the narrative in a simple and senseless manner.

The patience with which Overlord delays its monster reveal is impressive, albeit let down by how little they're then used for the remainder of the film.

Vengeance is intoxicating but all-consuming, and Overlord highlights the dangers of resorting to our enemies' lows.

Julius Avery blends war movie with zombie horror to create a big, fun, action-splattered hybrid film that proposes how the Nazis were working on reanimating dead soldiers during the D-Day invasion. Think of it as Saving Private Ryan of the Living Dead.
