By trying to remain indebted to a movie which already worked quite well on its own, and not trying to modernize or otherwise change the events therein, the film becomes overshadowed by its predecessor.

Malek makes a fine, low-key effort as the buddy who turns Papillon into a better man, but Hoffman is an impossible act to follow.

Papillon is not a bad movie, but more like a work of unfulfilled promise.

Sadly, Noer's Papillon is a grittier but largely generic addition to the popular prison drama subgenre.
