This 'prison'-focused full-length film--the first by Laurel and Hardy--was a ton of laughs, as they bring their unique brand of hijinks to such aspects as a hilarious loose tooth of Stan's causing him to make the worst possible sounds at the most inopportune times, and walking-on-eggshell relations with their cellmate, the infamous 'Tiger'. Very good and consistently re-watchable--even if it pales in comparison with their later movies.

One of L & H's early feature films and arguably one of their best! Shows the boys in prison and trying to escape!

Good Laurel and Hardy movie though obviously dated with prohibition references.

Not one of the funny duo's best efforts.

The blackface stuff jars a bit, but some classic L&H gags, the classroom scene especially!

Imperfect Laurel and Hardy feature (their first) which sags a little in the middle when the pair are on the run and in disguise as black cotton pickers. But there's enough effective gags here to see the piece through, and the boys do this sort of humour better than anybody else.

The funniest moments of this short movie happen mainly between Laurel & Hardy, their physical humor, such as hitting their heads together and so on. Otherwise the film has a bit simplistic story, and there are not enough twists in it. The storytelling is a bit slow. On the other hand, the characters are funny and some ideas and scenes are fun, such as Laurel's dance and Hardy's song Lady Moon, going to the dentist, and basically all the physical jokes. I think Stanley Laurel especially saves a great deal of the movie from the weak storyline. Fun comedy, though, as usual.

Likeable feature debut for Laurel and Hardy.

Fine prison escape comedy from Stan and Ollie! Interesting to see the baddies back then - they really looked bad!

Classic Laurel & Hardy comedy, the first full-length feature they made having appeared only in shorts up to that point. It's not the best film they've produced but it has some good gags, a couple of nice musical numbers and provides an interesting look at Hollywood racial attitudes of the period. Of course James Finlayson makes an appearance too, the man who pioneered "D'oh" half a century before Homer Simpson!

It has a couple of jokes in there, but it feels long. It's not horrible it just okay.

Laurel and Hardy put on black face and there are a couple of racist jokes which date it.
