Schanelec drives the narrative as if she doesn't know much about her characters, as if she put them in certain situations leaving them free to go beyond the limits of a pre-established script. As the character Sophie, regarding her stay in Rome, so are the characters and ourselves in the face of so many situations and life itself: somehow always a bit excited and also a bit bored, kind of waiting for something to happen. There is the contrast between the expectations we create and the time, even sometimes slow, that does not cease to move. In one of the most beautiful scenes, in the gardens where Mary's wedding is celebrated, the camera meets Marie, but this meeting is accidental. While accompanying her, the camera is independent of it. Other characters come in and out of its visual field, but it keeps following its own path without ever changing (the same aperture and shutter speed remain). Curiosity: besides the character Valerie looks like Jean Seberg in "Breathless", the scene where Clara asks Maria to dance to Schubert's Erlkönig seems to be a reference to "Je Vous Salue, Marie", where Marie, as a child, dances the last movement of Mahler's Ninth Symphony.
