Patriots Day is an intense but respectful docudrama that serves as both a love letter to the city of Boston and a timely reminder of everyday citizens' undefeatable spirit.

Respect, dignity, and truth.
August 5, 2019
Patriots Day is meant to honor the people and the city of Boston. Besides being a love letter to his hometown, Mark Wahlberg also gives us a solid performance in an exciting movie.

Patriots Day is a surprisingly steady retelling of a tragic event.
May 24, 2019
Patriots Day takes one of the biggest modern tragedies and plays it up as an over the top pat on the back to a fictional character instead of real people.
March 6, 2019
It works well enough, but offers few surprises.
February 13, 2019
Patriots Day is not without its flaws, but considering the events depicted took place not even four years ago, Berg, Wahlberg and the rest have done this story as much justice as possible.
February 13, 2019
Worthy though the film is in reproducing the events, its protagonists deserved to be better served.
February 5, 2019
This may not the film we need right now, but perhaps the only one we deserve.

Berg's film packs a punch with its extravagantly directed action and gruelling tension, but it often feels empty as it fails to fully grasp its subject matter in the awkwardly written screenplay.

Berg, like Bay before him, uses patriotism as an easy crutch to heighten the emotionality of scenes.

When Patriots Day is working at its best it is an intense thriller, but too bad those moments of intensity are in service of an unsettling glorification of violence as retribution.
October 17, 2018
Watching Wahlberg, all blue-collar grit and hungover charm, parachuted into the otherwise historically accurate plot felt something like watching a CGI character super-imposed into historical footage.
August 30, 2018
Second juggernaut knockout of a film that captures the human American spirit that will bring out the Patriot in you.
August 24, 2018
Wahlberg's entirely suited for the role of a law enforcement official rough around the edges with a proud, caring heart, a role he's done before, and he's in his own home turf.

The audience's knowledge is a challenge for a film like this one, but "Patriots Day" passes the test swimmingly. It's mostly a credit to the movie that despite the fact that we know what's coming, we're still shocked when it happens.

In telling the story as one of a community pulling together in the face of hatred and violence, Berg delivers a more nuanced take on terrorism and its impact than one might have expected from the helmer of the gung-ho Battleship.
April 13, 2018
Ultimately Patriots Day becomes a Berg and Wahlberg branding of our misery. They probably set out with the best intentions, but turning a tragedy into a fictional fantasy only creates a fragmented sense of reality that likely won't suture any wounds.

This is a worthy tribute to the folks in Boston who helped solve the case, and well worth watching.

It was really well done it was a heavy movie. Mark Wahlberg was great the characters were great -- so great in fact it's weird to call them characters because they are based on real people so the people were great and it does a lot of justice.
