Macdonald is the most consistent element of the drama and elevates the storytelling through her empowering and likable persona.

There's so much good here that, by the end, I forgave the faults and just had the good time I was meant to have.

For every predictable move Jasper's screenplay makes, Macdonald creates a surprising moment, some small gesture that reveals. She's a duckling turned swan.

Making music is not inherently cinematic, especially in the downtime between fully-formed performances. Patti Cake$, like so many struggling-musician movies before it, fills that space with a lot of melodrama.

"Patti Cake$" certainly lets its freak flag fly, but that's a good thing. This tough but tender film is a surefire crowd-pleaser.

"[Macdonald's performance is] a star-making turn in a movie that's all about chasing star-making chances, and it comes with excellent support from Everett and Moriarty."

While Patti can certainly makes some words rhyme, she has no flow.

[Patti Cake$] is a strangely old-fashioned heartwarmer about talent contests and "putting up flyers".
September 21, 2017
The cast is impeccable, with their music alternately fun and emotional. Patti Cake$ is a winner -- and Danielle Macdonald deserves to be a star.

To make us love Patti, despite all her rough edges, is no mean feat, but one [Danielle MacDonald] manages effortlessly.

The movie would fall apart if her lyrics weren't dope-why would we care what she's fighting for?-but the fact is: Killa P can really rhyme.
