[Bergman] gives us a movie within a movie, but he seems hardly to have made the enclosing movie, and then he throws away the inner one.

Maybe one's quarrel with Bergman has to do with a feeling that even austerity begins to look like a special kind of emotional self-indulgence.

This is the ultimate celluloid Rorschach test, where the production refuses to offer a straightforward solution to the maze of thorny challenges.

One of the most complicated and radical films even Bergman ever made.

[...]Persona marks a radical break for Bergman, an acknowledgment up front of the illusion and fundamental artifice of making movies.

The intimacy and the intensity of the camera's focus and the increasingly naked confessions and accusations in the dialogue create one of the most intense character pieces put on film.

Persona probes the depths of the human psyche, even as it examines the ways in which people tell stories and create new realities. Its themes are timeless, and it still holds up today.

Wonderfully complex but warmly human, Bergman's drama is one of his very best.

[A] masterpiece.

Bergman blends a theatrical subjectivity with a tactile visual intimacy, with his characters, the objects close at hand, and the superb coastal landscape.

Director Ingmar Bergman is modern cinema's most persistent observer of the human condition.
July 23, 2013
Ingmar Bergman's haunting masterpiece explores the gulf of communication that exists between a nurse and her silent patient.
October 20, 2010
Bergman's clear-eyed artistic study of the rules of interplay between opposite, ill-equipped dominant and submissive characters, expresses universal ideas about human compatibility.

A work of many possible readings -- any of which provide deeply disturbing looks into the psyche of the characters or character.

Ingmar Bergman's best film, I suppose, though it's still fairly tedious and overloaded with avant-garde cliches.
July 30, 2007
Bergman has come up with probably one of his most masterful films technically and in conception, but also one of his most difficult ones.
July 24, 2007
An intense, challenging and complex experimental psychological drama.
