The portraits could have done with a little more intimacy and drama, but the richly ambient score and sound design, over brooding shots of London's tower blocks, knit it hypnotically together, and the photography's splendid.

The film feels rather thrillingly like a work in progress: some of the people featured here will not make it in the end and, like mayflies, will have already had their moment come July.

Until the Olympics happen, the final chapters to these athletes' stories is missing. So we get the pain, but little of the gain.

If this were a 100 metre sprint, it'd go off with a bang, start ambling by the 50 metre mark, before finishing in near the back of the pack.
