This is a great summary of Glass's life and work.

This is a good documentary about a brilliant composer.

One can tell that there is little to the filmmaking technique. A guy, a camera... following another guy around and later, one supposes, editing the hell out of the footage. The end product? A fine documentary. (Kudos to the editor and director in what must have been an extended postproduction process).

One will be tempted to compare this to "GLASS: a portrait of Philip in twelve parts." Yes, that is the better film. But these films attempt different things. They view their subject in different ways. One is best off seeing both movies.

An after all, this is worth watching. If you are a fan of Philip Glass then you absolutely must see it.

Looking Glass is a slice of Philip Glass's life and career. The film spans the early days in school, through his operas, concertos, and symphonies. I liked the pacing of the documentary. It felt very even: a healthy dose of the music that most people are viewing this for as well as a good picture of what the man is like as a person and how he lives his life. My favorite part of the documentary was a very endearing part where Mr. Glass is trying to show the camera some of a film he is scoring. He pops the VHS tape into the machine...and can't get it to play. He tries different things before finally realizing that it is not plugged in. It was funny.
