This sentimental situation comedy begins with Dave the Dude (Glenn Ford) buying his daily apple from down and out street vendor Apple Annie (Bette Davis). Dave is a superstitious gangster who becomes alarmed when Annie and her apple cart are absent from her usual corner. He searches for her and finds the despondent vendor drunk in the gutter. Annie is upset because her daughter (Ann-Margret) will soon visit with her fiancee and is under the impression her mother is a lady of wealth and high society. Dave takes pity on Annie, and sets her up in a luxury apartment with a butler (Edward Everett Horton) and talks his fellow thugs into masquerading as blue blooded socialites. Sheldon Leonard and Peter Falk play colorful gangsters, with Falk being nominated for an Academy Award for his comedic role. Davis got the role of Apple Annie after first choice Helen Hayes had previous theater commitments in Europe. … More

Critic Reviews for Pocketful of Miracles
Capra's last movie--a lot better than given credit for
A painful experience, particularly considering the source (director: Frank Capra)
Audience Reviews for Pocketful of Miracles
Franks Capra's last movie is a affectionate comedy drama about an aging apple-seller who passes herself off as a woman of wealth in order to impress her daughter. Wonderful performances (Peter Falk was nominated for an Oscar) is somewhat undone by film's extreme 136min length.
wonderful fairy tale
I loved it and especially the way she cleaned the apple for Glen. They pulled it off and she got to see her daughter. Had me worried for awhile but everyone played their role. Love was in the air.
