Some may find it divertingly entertaining but for fans of the genre it's been there, done that, got the toga.

Occasionally entertaining in its silliness, Pompeii just about avoids total disaster, but even the volcanic spectacle underwhelms in this largely joyless blockbuster.

As the film begins, the camera pans slowly over what appear to be statues, but which turn our to be the petrified remains of the citizens of Pompeii. These are the most multi-dimensional people we see on screen.

Filmmaker Paul W. S. Anderson's misguided molten-driven melodrama Pompeii is not as explosive in conception as one would imagine based upon its manufactured, boisterous presentation.

Pompeii is bad, but not at all in the interesting way. It's derivative and tedious, without an original thought in its head on any level.

Besides some impressive technical wizardry, Pompeii lies in Paul W.S. Anderson's list of "let it burn" films.

The action sequences alone are jaw dropping, heart racing affairs but flashy stunts and technical wizardry don't always support a story lacking in character development, therefore giving you minimal people to root for.

At least Celine Dion doesn't appear on the soundtrack.

Pompeii's recreated world feels especially hokey as the backdrop for shoddy sets, cheesy costumes and ludicrous dialogue.
March 28, 2016
Overall, Pompeii goes big on the action but lacks the gravitas of being a compelling story.
July 14, 2015
Its impact is muted by the dull foreground figures.

Pompeii 3D is a swords-and-sandals disaster epic that contains all the B-movie tropes you might hope for... The only element missing is a decent script.
April 23, 2015
Hammy performances, poor editing, straight-to-DVD special effects, and bland direction.
July 2, 2014
Rapidly burnt by a volcanically ludicrous story, Pompeii rumbles and crumbles, over-baking itself into a frothy crisp--puffery on the outside and clichd passions within.

If the violence and tragedy of Pompeii's destruction by a projectile vomiting Mount Vesuvius in 79AD is hard to imagine, harder still is a fan of Paul W.S. Anderson.
May 2, 2014
If you thought the famous eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD matters because of the mass destruction and the tragic loss of thousands of lives then think again.

It's not just the ancient Roman city that gets burned to the ground here - careers are also convincingly incinerated by Paul WS Anderson's pitiful excuse for a historical disaster movie.
