Movie Info

Though racked with personal turmoil and crippling poverty, Vincent Van Gogh produced works that are now considered some of the best of the Expressionist style. His life and creations are detailed in Portrait of an Artist: Vincent -- A Dutchman. Van Gogh began painting late in life, having abandoned several quests for a spiritual career. His paintings only span a period of ten years during which time he lived in Paris. There, Van Gogh was part of an elite circle of friends that included Degas and Gauguin. The Dutch painter's symbolic use of color and frenzied brush strokes define his influential style. Despite Van Gogh's prolific output (he created over 800 paintings), he only sold one work during his lifetime. Van Gogh committed suicide at the age of 37. He is commonly remembered as one of the more important Dutch painters.
