  • The film looks like nothing so much as a very shrewd compendium of what the market requires. Pretty In Pink is a teenage version of those wrong side of the tracks romances of some 30 years ago, impeccably dressed in mid-eighties clobber.

  • First-Timer Howard Deutch is a nice surprise too. His precise, unexploitative direction is sympathetic to the awkward pauses in teen talk, to the mopery of first love, to the suicidal bravado of words spoken in heat.

  • These kids have a bumpy ride, but this is one film that identifies with their passions instead of indulging them, giving us a perfect back-seat view of kids out cruising, not for kicks but for a hard-earned sense of pride.

Audience Reviews for Pretty in Pink

With the exception maybe of TV's Skins, I've never seen a portrayal of High School that shows how high school probably actually was, but John Hughes' films at least find a way to capture the way high school felt, and the way we thought it was. The scenarios and personalities are exaggerated, but they're still genuine. Pretty in Pink isn't one of his best, but it's an adequate entry into his filmography. I don't think he was the best at romance, and since this is a love story at its core, that's a slight issue. The male romantic lead is kinda' bland, and Jon Cryer as Duckie is charming and at times extremely funny, but his role as the obsessed best friend doesn't come off as charming as it maybe once did in a post Not Another Teen Movie world. Pretty in Pink gets a passing grade on the John Hughes scale. It's still much better and more honest than most high school, but it's certainly not his greatest entry. That doesn't make it a bad movie though, in fact it makes it a good movie, just not a great one maybe.

One of John Hughes' seminal films, Pretty in Pink is a coming-of-age romantic drama. Starring Molly Ringwald, Jon Cryer, Annie Potts, Andrew McCarthy, and James Spader, the casting is exceptional. The story follows a poor girl from a lower class family who finds herself conflicted when she's asked out by one of her classmates who's part of an upper class clique. The script is especially well-written, particularly the characters; who feel authentic and fun. The soundtrack is also quite impressive, and features the pop hit "If You Leave" by OMD. A landmark film of the '80s, Pretty in Pink speaks to the social and personal struggles that teenagers face.

A sweet coming-of-age story with an adorable sense of humor, an awesome soundtrack and some superb performances by Stanton, Cryer and Potts, and if the end may not please you (like it did please me), the sincere way the movie shows the insecurities of youth definitely will.

In typical John Hughes fashion, Pretty in Pink is nostalgic, beautifully-filmed, touchingly honest, and wonderfully enjoyable.
