Movie Info

John Garfield stars as Al Schmid, a true-life marine who served in World War II. Schmid becomes a hero at Guadalcanal, defending a machine gun post and killing 200 Japanese before he is permanently blinded by a grenade. Despite being awarded the Navy Cross, Schmid returns home embittered by his disability. After a long and grueling convalescence, he is shaken back to life by his girl friend Ruth (Eleanor Parker) and his best pal (Dane Clark), neither of whom allow Al to wallow in self-pity. The pride in Pride of the Marines comes from Al Schmid's ultimate realization that his sacrifice was worthwhile, and that his sightlessness need not prevent him from leading a full and rewarding life.

Audience Reviews for Pride of the Marines

Best war movie that shows the hardships of injured soldiers returning home. Most war movies like to focus on the action of the battle, glory of a general or other individuals. Rarely do movies tell the story of the homecoming.

Powerful war film, which focuses more on the wounded soldiers adapting to life after returning home that it does on the war itself. It is melodramatic, but it needs to be to make it?s point. The performances are outstanding by everyone in the cast. John Garfield and Eleanor Parker are excellent in the leads. Rosemary DeCamp, John Ridgely, Ann Todd and Dane Clark provide great support. It is a great and inspiring story, and that story was nominated for an Academy Award. Good direction by Delmer Daves. It has a very creative dream sequence. It was an important film in it's time and paved the way for the similar The Best Years of Our Lives.
