Two people from different cultures discover reality doesn't quite live up to their dreams in this drama from writer and director Juan Laguna. Marem is a fourteen-year-old girl from Senegal who is studying dance and dreams of performing in Europe some day. Meanwhile in Spain, Sonia is a woman who is also passionate about dance and is fascinated by the culture and creativity of the African nations. Sonia has recently married Pap Ndiaye, a man from Senegal whose daughter is Marem, and Pap arranges for Marem to visit Spain while his new wife sees Africa for the first time. However, the experience is brutally disillusioning for both women; it's not until Sonia arrives at Pap's home in Senegal that she discovers he has already wed two other women, and Marem finds out that poverty and lawlessness are just as common in Europe as they are at home. However, Marem and Sonia are still caught up with the love of music and dance despite their disappointments. Princess of Africa was an official selection at the 2008 Montreal World Film Festival.
