Movie Info

This teen comedy from Disney is based on a popular novel by Meg Cabot and directed by Garry Marshall. Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway) is a teenage klutz who's openly mocked by the popular Lana Thomas (pop singer Mandy Moore). In fact, Mia's only friend at her exclusive prep school is the socially outcast Lilly (Heather Matarazzo). Mia's life takes a dramatic turn, however, when her mom announces that her late biological father was in actuality the crown prince of a small European nation, Genovia. Now Mia is the sole heir to the throne, and her grandmother, Queen Clarisse Renaldi (Julie Andrews) wants to tutor the awkward teen in royal behavior. It's a daunting task given Mia's lax table manners, poise, and hair care, but the girl perseveres with some makeover help from her grandmother's security chief Hector Elizondo) and a style expert (Larry Miller). In the meantime, Mia's romantic affections are torn between the handsome, popular Josh (Erik Von Detten) and the more appropriate Michael (Robert Schwartzman), who also happens to be Lilly's brother. The Princess Diaries is the second film from Whitney Houston's production shingle after the television version of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella (1997). ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

This movie is not without its flaws. It's very clichéd as a Disney movie, however as a child of the 90's I was young when this movie was released and now the reason I enjoy it is more because of nostalgia then it being a great movie.

Not my thing, but im a guy, haha. The movie has a interesting premise, and works out well, but soon becomes just another chick flick, with afunny cast, but is not my kind of movie.

A fun and wishful film about a geek that becomes a princess. Brilliant in the way that every teenage girl can identify with Mia in some way. If you need a pick up then watch it.

Once in a while, I enjoy a good, cliched teen comedy. In honor of the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton taking place today, I shall review "The Princess Diaries". This is the film that made Oscar-nominee, future Catwoman, Anne Hathaway a star. Anne plays a shy, lonely teenage girl named Mia Thermopolis. When Mia's rich, royal grandmother comes to visit, Mia discovers that she has royal blood and is the princess of a made-up foreign country known as Genovia. She gets a makeover, learns royal manners (which she fails to learn, very funny!), and gets what every celerity hates: unwanted media attention. I thought "The Princess Diaries" was a sweet, funny movie. Anne Hathaway is a great actress in her role of Mia and plays a charming, clumsy princess. I love Julie Andrews and she plays the kind, witty woman we all came to know and love in films such as "The Sound of Music" and "Mary Poppins". Hector Elizondo was cool and funny. I would like to hang out, or even make a movie, with him. The supporting cast includes Mandy Moore, Eric Von Detten, and Sandra Oh. Mandy Moore played the snotty, popular cheerleader. Oh, she was funny but her acting skills: meh, okay. Eric Von Detten is the arrogant jock Mia has a crush on. Decent actor. Of the supporting minor cast, I enjoyed Sandra Oh as the vice principal. I don't watch "Grey's Anatomy" but I seem to be entertained by Sandra Oh when I see her in any film. The writing was good. Had witty moments and also its weak one. It had a good script but I think the main issue is that the film is cliched. Girl likes jock, stuck-up blonde cheerleader, invisible, socially awkward protagonist. We've all seen these before. "The Princess Diaries" is a great family/teen comedy. Its got enough for both genders to enjoy from and is one of the better live-action Disney family films from the 2000s decade. I like this movie and I bet you will enjoy some of it too. Thanks for reading and leave clean comments below. We all like at least one movie that has a Rotten rating on the Tomatometer, don't we? "Its alright! Its okay! You're gonna hit it anyway!"
