Desperately wants to be some kind of a cautionary tale for urban youths, but is instead a preachy and inane waste of time.

I've seen this movie being shown on the BET channel so many times. I actually, didn't care for it to much, but it does have its good moments.

Prison Song Part musical, part prison story all with one big message hammered home repeatedly that life in the US isn’t fair to people of color. I can’t argue with that message, but unfortunately that doesn’t necessarily guarantee a good movie. In this case it does guarantee the viewer feeling depressed and unenlightened and not very optimistic. I thought the movie was predictable from beginning to end and I think we should have been given something here to hold on to that maybe there’s some way to change things. I’m not saying that the movie should have sold out for a happy story or anything like that, but just show that maybe there is some hope. Oddly, Elvis Costello gets second billing here and only has one scene lasting about one minute. I rate this movie a 6 out of 10. It’s really hard for me to recommend this movie though. Not because it’s so gritty, but because it’s so grim and hopeless.
