I quite enjoyed this movie even if I found it had some flaws. I think the story was still needlessly convoluted. I still think the story is told in an effective manner. I think there's a good a mystery that was brewing throughout the flick. I think a lot of the air in the mystery once it nears the end, or rather as the movie becomes more convoluted, so that definitely was a detriment. But it's still an intriguing noir murder mystery. The cast is really good, I've only seen Hwan Jeong-Min in two movies now and I think he's a great actor and does a fine job in this film. Personally I don't think this is a role that requires more from him but he still does a great job in this film and he has good chemistry Ryoo Deok-hwan. The movie is beautifully shot, I can imagine this film would've looked even better on an HD-tv. It manages to, visually. capture a retro feel, granted a lot of this is also costume design and the location, but the film looked as if it really were 1910, so props to that. The movie also has its comedic moments which is always welcome as long as it's worked naturally into the plot. One thing the movie does well is, even with its flaws, it's a story we've all seen before told in an unique manner. There's an offbeat charm about the film that is also a benefit. So even with its story being convoluted and sometimes hard to follow, this is an encouraging debut film from Park Dae-min and I look forward to seeing more of his work. If that includes a sequel to this film, which it was set up by the end of the film, then I'd have no problem because I think the setting, the characters, and just the offbeat charm can make this an entertaining franchise...if they choose to go that route of course, if not then I'm happy just keeping up with Park Dae-min's work from now on.
Why the bad ratings Flixster??? One of the better Korean films of 2009 so far! This is one a great period film with some action and adventure much in the same vein as "The Good, The Bad, The Weird" for Korean cinema. A movie about Joseon's first detective depicts some of the challenges facing citizens when the police are as corrupt as the politicians. Who do they turn to but the charismatic Jin-ho. The main characters were all great and well acted, with plenty of action and a storyline that doesn't really lag at any point luckily. It is a period film so we do get to see old Joseon and the world is well created, drawing us in. Not a bad movie at all, hopefully this review will convince people to at least give it a chance!
