Placido Domingo conducted this production of Madama Butterfly, performed in Torre del Lago, where Puccini made his home in a local villa he owned. The story unfolds as the American Lt. Pinkerton marries a geisha in early 20th Century Nagasaki. In love for the moment, Pinkerton declares his intention to someday find a "real" American wife, and proceeds to do just that. Madama Butterfly chooses suicide over a life of disgrace.
