Movie Info

In this film based on the stage play, self-ordained Reverend Purlie Victorious Judson (Ossie Davis) returns to his hometown of Cotchipee, Ga., to build an integrated church. To fund its construction, he asks his fiancée, Lutiebelle Gussie Mae Jenkins (Ruby Dee), to masquerade as his dead cousin Bea, so he can gain access to her unclaimed inheritance. All that stands in his way is the curmudgeonly codger Captain Cotchipee (Sorrell Booke), who runs the local cotton plantation.
