Pusher is some kind of tragedy, though not the one its filmmakers intended.

Do we really need another cautionary tale about an ambitious drug dealer dramatically falling from grace?

An efficient but rather redundant London-set remake of the cult 1996 Danish drug thriller directed by Nicolas Winding Refn.

... it feels like just another movie about crime and drugs as Frank's week goes from bad to worse.

'Pusher' is pretty empty of purpose.

Pusher faithfully mimics Nicolas Winding Refn's 1996 Danish crime saga while missing its nasty, grungy spirit.

Prieto treats the experience like a music video, with superfluous visual ornamentation getting in the way of gritty suspense. Pusher is a sound and light show that should have its power strip unplugged.

Prieto does what he can to keep things roaring along, but the overall effect is not a lot more stimulating than your average diet cola.

Another cheap 'n' nasty London gangster flick.

This film may look sleek and urgent, but it never feels like anything more than a run-of-the-mill London drugs thriller. The cast is good, and the imagery is striking, but it never adds anything new to the genre.

The chief problem here is that Frank is neither likable nor very bright. For the most part, you're thinking, go ahead, bust his kneecaps.

Just stick to the original: Fate is always more fetching than formula.

The characters that populate Pusher are surprisingly na´ve and hardly the brightest of bulbs. So much for the image of the wily, street-smart criminal.

...a questionable reboot that is unlikely to enjoy the success (and sequels) of its predecessor.

Has a fair amount of flashy momentum, and decent work from Richard Coyle in the lead, but plausibility is a disaster area.

If Refn made Pusher, then Prieto sets out to make Pushest.

Ultimately a pointless remake and a disappointing thriller to boot, thanks to a lack of energy and an over-familiar plot.

The remake undercuts most everything that made the original distinctive, its tangy, pungent sense of low-lifes and their environment swept away for a glam, stylized world.

Refn may have lent his name as an executive producer and his blessing to Spanish director Luis Prieto, but the inventiveness of the original is MIA.
