Movie Info

The story is set on the holy ghats of Ganges Banaras where Kundan sees Joya much before his adolescent and falls in love with her head over heels... Circumstances force Zoya to go to Delhi for further education. A wannabe politician steals her heart, but be aware this is not a run of the mill triangle and just when you expect that now the feel good regular Bollywood romancer will take charge. There is twist which can be anything from a political conspiracy to a joke on the so called paper revolutionaries (social media) revolutionaries who jump in the protest without understanding the root cause of the issue.

Somehow, and despite several unrealistic shifts in tone and plot, director Aanand Rai pulls it all together into an appealing mishmash.

And after the first 10 minutes, I was utterly bowled over by Dhanush's energy and charm.

Raanjhanaa appears to be a classic Bollywood love story of two young people separated by social divisions. Instead, this is a compelling and somewhat disturbing tale of one man's obsession with love to the detriment of himself and his beloved.

Audience Reviews for Raanjhnaa

I have no idea why this didn't win best film or best actor at any award ceremony. The story is great, and so are the performances. Dhanush definitely gave the best performance by a male in 2013 and Sonam kapoor is good too. The first half is amazing. There was never a point in the first half where the story is slow moving. Although in the second half, Raanjhanaa starts to focus on politics which slowed down the entire movie.

This movie takes you on a wonderful ride of the vibrant and colorful Benares through the lives of the comtemporary middle class. The backdrop of the ganges, the narrow streets of this culturally rich city and the riot of festivals blend fluidly with the narration of this love tale. Watch this for its splendid direction, it's strong performances and lovable characters esp Murari. Never before has a movie ended with such grace and conviction. The equation of a young man's life beautifully sums up; with the very few things that make it worthwhile - Friends to Live for and a Love to die for.
