There are stupendous performances, but what intended to be an unexpected story winds up being fatal for the film. [Full Review in Spanish]

Don't be fooled by the title, this isn't a bouncy 70s-style comedy. Tonally it's a mixed bag, and the last act doesn't work. I came out as much bemused as deflated. The performances keep it watchable, along with a big set-piece action scene.

It's been a long while since I've seen a film start so promisingly before so spectacularly crashing and burning by the time it crosses the finish line.

If the movie had made their characters proper equals, it could have been something great.

The characters are too generic to power a good love story and the plot's big unhappy turn is so arbitrary that you wonder if the writers had a list of options and made a random pick.

What ought to have been a sleek romantic heist movie is soon overcomplicated by a dizzying number of plot developments.

Frankly, it is a bit of a mess.

Just as the film appears to be on the brink of ignition...it suddenly reaches way beyond the abilities of the Flemish director and co-writer Michael R. Roskam and becomes an odd, lumbering melodrama.

A car crash. And not the Cronenberg kind.

Whilst far from an outright disaster, Racer and the Jailbird fails to satisfy on any level: its female lead is a passenger, its romance is lacklustre and, as a thriller, it's desperately short on engine power.

It's an exhausting watch; a film that never forges a true sense of character, and feels like it was rushed into production before the screenplay had even been completed.
May 16, 2018
Soapy slow mistitled romantic thriller that never comes to a boil.
May 12, 2018
It's stylish and occasionally risqué, but unlike its hero and heroine, it refuses to commit to any one of them.
May 11, 2018
An episodic, superficial presentation of two intersecting characters, the plot zig zags through scenes of Gino and Bibi talking, having unappealing sex, driving and talking, stealing and repeating the pattern.
May 10, 2018
It's a film whose first half serves the delectable dessert before moving on to the dreary main course.
May 10, 2018
Schoenaerts and Exarchopoulos are still good, but the story drags them down.
May 10, 2018
Gino and Bénédicte devolve from characters who determine their own destiny into ciphers who arouse more pity than sympathy.
May 9, 2018
Two good characters and two good performances go into the old poubelle - or, as we say in English, the garbage bin.
May 4, 2018
As the film funnels into more conventional territory, you wonder why these two lost souls should be together in the first place.
