Movie Info

Ram Gopal Varma directs this violent crime biopic inspired by the true life tale of Indian political leader Paritala Ravi, whose fierce reputation inspired paralyzing fear in both the authorities and his longtime nemesis Suri. Hero to some and villain to others, Ravi rose to power after his father and brother were both slain as sociopolitical turmoil gripped their country. Later, during his rise to power, Ravi would prove an especially hard man for his rivals to kill. In 2005, however, Ravi's violent history caught up with him when he was assassinated in broad daylight by a team of hired killers purportedly organized by Suri, who had vowed revenge following the brutal murder of his own father and brother at the hands of his rival's faction. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Action movie fans are more likely to like this, but I didn't find it great. Didn't fare so well at B.O. too, but RGV must have recovered quite a lot through television rights only. Later came to know that it's inspired by a true story. The movie doesn't mention so anywhere, at least the first part (and if it does, I missed it, but the probability for that is too low. Besides, not being interested in politics, I wasn't aware that much of the violence had occurred for real in some part of my own country. Seems like I'm under-estimating my ignorance!!! Reality is truly brutal, tragic & stranger than fiction sometimes). Not sure whether I'll go for the sequel or not (already know its ending, thanks to my cousin who spilled it out when I'd merely asked him whether he liked the sequel or not).

A fantastic attempt by maverick filmmaker RGV to retell the origin story of slain political leader Paritala Ravi. It's a remarkable attempt, just for the braveness to portray a martyr leader of a leading political party in a neutral point of view. There isn't much of a story, but the character developments are too brilliant to negate it. The casting is superb and the film is brilliant technically. RGV's shots are intense and a treat to watch except for a few instances in which you might think he's too obsessed with gimmickry in camera works. As a disclaimer, I could say it's a very violent film, but I guess nobody would expect a DDLJ out of a film titled Rakht Charitra.
