August 21, 2001
A few decent running gags ... and an ocean of bad ones.
August 17, 2001
Race, which delights in bashing all manner of transportation, hits its silly stride early and never shifts into a higher gear.
August 17, 2001
It's a mad mad mad mad world, all right, and Rat Race makes it seem all the zanier.
August 17, 2001
Rat Race is much funnier than most comedies currently in release -- compared with American Pie 2 ... But ultimately it falls just short of the finish line.
August 17, 2001
The funniest film to come along since South Park.

These people, and the actors who play them, work so very hard that just watching them tires you out.

Zucker, who's been dabbling in tearjerkers like Ghost for the past decade, is a little rusty.

If you don't think Hollywood movies have gone all soft in the head and heart, compare the sticky sweet ending of this with the finale to It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.

August 17, 2001
Hollywood Squares remake of Mad World.
August 17, 2001
The sight gags are too few and far between and the characters, in varying degrees, all seem pale refugees from sitcomland.
August 17, 2001
There are no winners in Rat Race, only a lineup of comic actors running on empty long before the dust settles.
August 16, 2001
Rat Race chooses to rehash the worst aspect of Mad, Mad World, downgrading the experience from mindless to dreadful.

Zucker and Breckman get more than enough humor out of sharp set pieces and smartly scripted character clashes to sprint all the way to the finish line.
August 16, 2001
With alarmingly few exceptions ... nothing that occurs can remotely be construed as humorous.

That so much energy and talent could be squandered on such idiocy says loads about the state of Hollywood today.

A mixed bag that's a perfect fit for this summer of mediocrity.

August 16, 2001
A few gags are too inspired for Rat Race to be lumped in with the recent spate of wretched comedies. But it also includes too many broad, shrill and gratuitously vulgar moments to be defended without apologies.
August 14, 2001
Funnier than it could reasonably hope to be.

Rat Race has swell stunts and special effects and enough laughs of all kinds to recover from its less successful episodes.
