This isn’t just a giddy romp where a badass in high-tops channels working-class rage and comes out on top. It’s a little more brutal, a little uglier, with deaths that wouldn’t be out of place in one of Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett’s Scream movies.

It runs mostly through the motions, decrescendoing after every kill into a cyclical thrill ride. Avoiding spoilers, the sequel only veers in a new direction toward the end, but this twist comes after the story flatlines.

This does exactly what a sequel is supposed to do: go bigger, better, and have higher stakes. A truly worthy continuation of one of my favorite horror movies in recent memory.
