Redundant and empty action sequences, one dimensional socio-political commentary and jerky camera movements hurts Red Eagle badly. Add some vapid cliche characters (comic relief detective, love interest for the hero) and the movie ends up in the same alley where every single mediocre super hero movie of the last 15 years is. Mr Wisit, you can do way better than this.
Wisit Sasanatieng brings Thailand's superhero to the big screen in Red Eagle.
The film takes its time at revealing the identity of the man behind the mask, and even more time at disclosing the details and history behind that man. That sort of works in this film's favor because there aren't a whole lot of plot details for a story that runs over 2 hours. Having this subplot unveil throughout the entire picture helps cover that up. On a side note, the Red Eagle even seems like a background character in the early going.
The action comes complete with some good choreography, along with some decent enough effects. The bone effect shots for the major blows stand out and the violence even gets bloody from time to time. The Red Eagle versus Black Devil segment is a notable highlight of the film.
The acting is good, although the characters need a little more work. Ananda Everingham is an effective superhero while the lovely Yarinda Bunnag is a good leading lady. Wannasingh Prasertkul tends to stand out as a show stealing cop.
Red Eagle does have imperfections and blemishes; however, there are enough positives to turn this into a passable Thai superhero movie.
