A dark-hearted man searches for the stranger who claimed his brother's life in this drama from Chinese filmmaker Cai Shangjun. Lao Tie (Chen Jianbin) was working in a quarry in a small mountain community when he caused an accident that seriously injured another worker; not especially interested in making restitution, Lao is looking for a reason to leave town, and gets one when he learns his brother has died under mysterious circumstances. Lao travels to the city of Chongqing to find out what happened, and hopes to claim a reward for catching the killer; he soon run afoul of corrupt figures on both sides of the law, and slowly but surely pieces together the truth about what became of his sibling. Along the way, he has a grim, physically charged reunion with his former girlfriend and discovers not all is well with the son he fathered with her. Ren Shan Ren Hai (aka People Mountain People Sea) received its North American premiere at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival.
