It is sort of the opposite of 'Northern Exposure' where everyone is quirky, and loving it. Here, quirkiness is opposed strongly.

Respiro begins as a portrait of a woman who refuses to abide by the conventions of the comunity and ends with a bit of inspired magical realism.

We're slouched back with our heads resting on the tops of the seats, relaxing and letting our minds leap out of our heads to spend 95 minutes at play in Lampedusa.

A mixture of great Italian cinema and fluffy silliness.

An inviting performance by Golino and some outstanding underwater photography enliven director/writer Emanuele Crialese's adaptation of an Italian legend.

A sad, slight film but with a sweet, smooth finish that makes you feel richer for having watched and absorbed and felt.

Whatever its shortcomings, Respiro provides [Valeria Golino] with a juicy leading role, and she takes full advantage of the opportunity.

If the Italian Neo-Realists had ever granted themselves enough romanticism (or found a little money) to shoot in color, they might have made Respiro.

It's watchable because of Golino, whose performance is both a revelation and a saving grace.

Will have you contemplating a trip to Lampedusa - and wishing Golino would get the parts she deserves.

A small, sensual and unforgettable Italian drama that transports us to a place wonderfully exotic yet strangely familiar.

You can almost feel the dull heat radiating off the screen -- it's a wonder cinematographer Fabio Zamarion's lenses didn't simply melt clean off -- and this thick and hazy brilliance infuses the story with all sorts of strange neo-realistic vibes.

A vital, startling film that is steeped in the noblest traditions of Italian cinema and whose sense of transcendence is accompanied by an equally powerful humanism.

The film is sleepy and has a general air of mystery and unreality, which is fitting for a fable. All the performances are delightful.
