Audience Reviews for Resurrection of Eve

What difference a year makes. The Mitchell Brothers kicked off the golden age of porn with their 1972 film Behind the Green Door (BGD). Interestingly, BGD played like a film made by a gifted film student with horrible editing abilities. It almost hung together and the cadence of sexuality was excellently choreographed to get more and more explicit as the film ran. It was a complete fantasy world - and because of that, the film managed to be a rather enjoyable period piece about forbidden fantasy. By comparison, The Resurrection of Eve suffers from a number of major problems, notwithstanding the change in pornography standards due to Miller vs. California that forced the film to be more story-focused to make it have "serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value," which the filmmakers were ill-equipped to do adequately. Horrible editing mars the film, making it a confusing mess in the first half. The lush sets of BGD are traded for somewhat silly sets (the kitchen table set is hilarious...), foreshadowing the sets of porn in the future. The lack of ability of the filmmakers to create a coherent story makes the abhorrent initial scenes of child molestation seem to stand alone with no reason for its purpose in the film (other than to have a scene of child molestation - with of-age actors, of course). Near the end of the film, however, things begin to coalesce as the focus begins to be more overtly sexual. Swinger parties are the topic and party-after-party is shot in ways that show that the filmmaker had the eye of a decent Director of Photography, along with an early 70's social conscience as lesbian, gay, and interracial activity is portrayed. The sexuality, while graphic, is quite elegantly and erotically shot and towers mightily over the cookie-cutter sexuality that was soon to become the standard for all pornography to this very day. It is an interesting period-piece, but very difficult to watch.
