Marco L @decatur555 3 days ago A strong, uncomfortable historical drama about one of those wartime predators who are even more disgusting because they do not look like monsters at first. What affected me most was the way he moves through Nazi-occupied Amsterdam with charm, calculation and cold blood, turning fear into a business and other people’s desperation into profit. Jeroen van Koningsbrugge is excellent: charismatic, controlled and repulsive precisely because he can seem trustworthy. The film is classical and not perfect; at times it could go deeper, and such a murky life might have worked even better as a series. But the atmosphere is strong, Amsterdam feels beautiful and poisoned, and the story leaves real anger behind. It is not only about Nazis, but about betrayal, lies and the people who enrich themselves inside horror. A film that makes you feel disgust, helplessness and the bitter frustration of watching evil smile and survive. See more David F @FallenAngel00me Jul 30, 2026 Well shot, pity about no English audio option though. The low score is because it's not a accurate portrayal. Wery wasn't forced or manipulated into collaboration with the SD. She did so willingly. It is important to not let modern identity politics erase what actually happened. The Holocaust shows that women can be bad people too. Just wish the media would recognise this. The 'bad woman is just misunderstood' cliche is bad enough in works of fiction, it has no place in a movie about real people and events. See more Mary Ann F @RT22179711 Jan 10, 2025 I'll be honest and say that I quit this film with 45 minutes left to go. Up until that point it was decent, with good storytelling, good characterizations and great acting. But then it started getting extremely tedious and it completely lost my attention, which is very unusual for me, as I'll watch even a bad film until the end. But that's the paradox about Riphagen, as technically it's not *bad.* I'm giving it three stars, which is a neutral score, as possibly it's just a weary evening for me and I picked the wrong film for this kind of night. That said, I'm watching it on the heels of "Number 24," a Norwegian WWII film that's one of the best movies I've seen on that war, EVER. I was hoping, perhaps, for a similar rush from Riphagen, but it's not in the same league. If you're trying to choose, pick Number 24 instead, hands down See more Eric P @RT00624480 Dec 29, 2024 SPOILER. When you promise to kill the vilain a dozen times but never do it when confronted, you deserve to die. Otherwise you’re just like a James Bond evil man who plays with his food. Pull the trigger and stop whining Jan. That made the movie good at first but unbearable and I couldn’t wait for it to end within the last 45 minutes. It started good…. I know it’s true to the story but it made for a bad ending. See more Han T @Hantms Jul 9, 2024 Riphagen was an absolute sociopath and his portrayal here shows him as one of the best villains in recent movie history. It reminds a bit of watching movies about people like Pablo Escobar; it's far more insane than any writer could come up with, and the story is mostly real.. Amazing. See more Read all reviews
