Yukisada takes the somewhat far-fetched story of the original in order to direct a film that focuses on the kids of the era, and the consequences the lack of guidance from parents and teachers ( which are almost non-existent in the film) have to youths.

The movie is dour, and poignant, and dour, and poetic, and dour. But the positives outweigh the negatives, and it does end with a glimmer of hope among the gloom.

A two-hour drudgery that solves a mystery whose answer was never pressing with the silliest possible solution. There's a wide chasm between realism and misanthropy, and River's Edge falls on the wrong side of that gap.
