Smith's powerfully crafted performance does nothing less than restore the humanity to a man who has, over a quarter-century, been reduced to a talking point and a symbol.
It's worth seeing because of its engrossing story, which is filled with odd details you probably haven't heard before ... and for the skill with which the story has been told.
A preacher's howl of anger and frustration at the personal and political forces which crushed King ... as well as his rejection from some following his well-intended plea for everyone to "get along".
The play feels like stumbling upon an ancient spell.
Drenched in sweat, looming large but speaking with an impassioned hush, Smith delivers his achronological history lesson like a man possessed, channeling the rage of a nation into a breathless, rat-a-tat flurry ...
With the fierce words of a practiced poet, Smith is able to weave pertinent and seemingly inconsequential details into a poignant, heartbreaking and sometimes even funny story of a man whose life was practically erased.
'Rodney King' is a powerful piece of work, putting us in his head during that still-shocking beating, Smith counting off the baton hits in a manner that returns this historical event into the realm of the visceral and personal.
Lee is restrained and meditative as a director, save a few Lee-isms with camera effects... Lee makes sure that the story of where we were in 1992, and where we still are in many respects, is what we get.
Racism and police brutality described in moving monologue.
