  • What Bernardi has achieved is a frank, shrewd, well-written and very well performed film that incorporates prominent, under-explored transgender and LGBT themes that challenges preconceived notions and ideas.

This movie was better than I thought it would be (in the areas that really matter). Rick Okon was great, very genuine and believable in his performance of a very difficult role. The other characters/actors were also quite realistic too, I found. However, there were some change-of-hearts/change-of-characters that I think may have happened a little too fast, but I understand that with the timeline of the movie they couldn't really have months go by or have slower, more realistic changes in people. On the technical side, they did very well with the (what I'm assuming are) prosthetics for Rick - very real looking. The photography (especially some of the close-ups) were stylistically quite beautiful. Everything fit together quite nicely. All in all, this was a well acted, well written, and overall well done movie. I was engaged the entire time, and really felt for the lead character. I think they did a very good job portraying a very real life struggle for transsexual people. Yet, at the same time showing that it is possible to cope through the struggle and find happiness - unlike all the depressing movies that end up having the person kill themselves. I really liked that aspect - it showed the strength that people can have when faced with adversity. Oh! I was also very pleased to see them highlight the fact that, transsexuality has nothing to do with sexual orientation (i.e who one is attracted to). It's something that few people understand and yet something that needs to be accepted. What did this movie teach me? German movies tend to be really good quality and have very believable characters and situations (or at least, the ones I seen have been).
