A young wife comes to believe that her offspring is not of this world. Waifish Rosemary Woodhouse (Mia Farrow) and her struggling actor husband Guy (John Cassavetes) move to a New York City apartment building with an ominous reputation and odd neighbors Roman and Minnie Castavet (Sidney Blackmer, Ruth Gordon). Rosemary’s Baby takes the little flap of cuticle and peels it all the way up to the elbow. It was clearly the inspiration for many movies and moviemakers since. While watching this, I kept drawing parallels with Hereditary.

One of the best horror movies of its time, one that continues to hold up today. Utilizing elements of physiological horror and the times rising fear of the Church of Satan, Rosemarys Baby is a classic with an ending that is sure to unsettle anyone. An essential to the world of horror.

Rosemary’s Baby is a masterclass in restraint and psychological horror. With virtually no blood or gore, Polanski crafts terror through paranoia, atmosphere, and an ever-tightening sense of dread. The horror doesn’t explode — it accumulates, scene by scene, until the film feels like a living nightmare you’re trapped inside. Ordinary spaces become threatening, neighbors become sinister, and trust slowly dissolves. When the final act arrives, the payoff is chilling and unforgettable, its quiet horror far more disturbing than anything graphic. A landmark of the genre and one of the most unsettling films ever made, Rosemary’s Baby set the template for modern horror long before The Exorcist.
