Movie Info

A policeman begins seeing the spirits of the dead after a near-fatal attack in this thriller from director Kelvin Tong. Lee (Shawn Yue) and Wong (Ekin Cheng) are a pair of cops working the beat in Hong Kong who pull over a man during a routine traffic stop one night. The situation takes an ugly turn and Lee is violently attacked while the lawman sees what he's certain is the ghost of a woman, stained with blood. Seven weeks later, Lee is released from the hospital and goes back to work, but since he continues to insist he saw a ghost, Lee is transferred from a patrol car to a mysterious branch known as the Miscellaneous Affairs Department, led by Mr. Wong, a man with no belief in the paranormal. While sorting through cases with Miscellaneous Affairs, Lee once again sees a spirit as he visits a swimming pool where a young boy drowned, and is visited by the ghost of the child. Daiyat Gye (aka Rule #1) also stars Fiona Xie and Stephanie Che. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Audience Reviews for Rule Number One (Rule #1)

First of, this is a ghost story originating out of Hong Kong...proving once again the best asian horror comes out of Japan or South Korea. Ekin is a fine talent but miscast in this movie. Shawn is eye candy but his screen presence is not even close to Nicholas Tse. Second, the story and pacing is uneven. It seems needless drama is focused on the spirts coming out of the alcohol bottle rather than those causing the deaths/suicides. There are those gotcha quick scares, and some of the sound effects do a nice job in creating an eerie atmosphere early in the movie. Unfortunately, the storyline staggers all over the place and leaves the viewer more frustrated than scared. In the final thirty minutes, the movie spins in a different direction, borrowing heavily from the US release "Fallen", where the spirit jumps from body to body to do its evil deeds. To top it off..in the end sequence there is a flashback scene which turns the movie on its head, leaving most viewers mightily baffled =/ . Rule #1---> stick to a clear theme and don't outsmart yourself with the twists..you cheat the audience ultimately!
